Households without security devices are more than four times as likely to be burgled, than those without. Not a surprising statistic to any security professional but one it seems that continues to be ignored by many UK households. Figures suggest that basic domestic security measures such as additional door or window locks are still missing from one in two homes, while door chains or security lighting are missing from around two thirds of them. With 522,640 burglary offences reported each year, around half of which are dwellings, domestic security is a major issue that needs tackling. As a working locksmith it still is unbelievable what some customers have in the way of security, for their home. Front door locks that are cheap rubbish as they seem to think that this will do. I have attended a call out that the main and only front door to the property has a 3-lever garden shed lock fitted, and another had just a ledge and brace shed door fitted to the rear of the property. What’s going on in the minds of the public? You have your house, your home, and this holds all your possessions and on top of that you are in the house with maybe your family, children... What did you do when you first moved in to your home? Nothing. As you were handed the keys from the estate agent, and you moved in without thinking about changing the locks to the property. How many keys are there to the front door lock to your home? Every one ends up having a copy of a key, for the family, mum and dad, the neighbour; do you really think that you get all the keys? Answer - no. Ok putting that aside, now here is the shocker, you move in, all happy, but if you have not changed the locks, and the unfortunate happens, that you are burgled, you might find that you are not insured, as many insurance companies will ask the question: Did you replace the locks when you first moved in? And what do we say? No - because there was no need, the locks work perfectly. Wrong answer as now your home insurance is void. I talk to many people on this matter and it’s always the same reply - I did not realise, did not take a moment to think about this. When you move in check your insurance details, and if that this is still unclear, change the locks, do it now, don’t wait for tomorrow. Your safety your home. With new locks installed its peace of mind, you have the only keys now, and you’re in charge. Don’t forget the window locks, if you can, upgrade, or just simply fit extra locking bolts. To fit new locks to your home on average cost maybe £120 and not cheap locks, stay well clear of that you do get what you pay for, there are so many cheap imports today, get something reasonable. Get advice - all lock types can be upgraded, you can have high security locks installed, but the main thing to check, if you have Mortice locks fitted mainly to wood front or back doors you must check to make sure that they are British Standard locks, as this too will affect your insurance. Go to your local Locksmith and ask advice on this.
